Resistol Rookie Roundup

The 4th Annual Resistol Rookie Roundup kicked off April 25-26th in the historic Cowtown Coliseum in the Fort Worth Stockyards. This event, which is sanctioned by the PRCA and WPRA, features the top 15 first year cardholders in each event competing for a piece of the $100,000 payout. Pete Carr Pro Rodeo, Hampton Pro Rodeo, and Pickett Pro Rodeo Co brought some amazing bucking horses that threw everything at the cowboys, making these rookies work hard to earn a spot in the first round to move onto the semi-finals and shootout round. Fans were excited to see three time world champion bareback rider Tim O'Connell on the mic as one of the announcers for the event along with veteran announcer Justin McKee. Summer Boyd and Madison Schalla stunned the crowed with their trick riding acts. Clay Heger and Noah Krepps kept the bull riders safe and Jeff Dees and Jake Dees did a great job as pickup men.

Gavin French just absolutely dominated the bareback riding taking first in all three rounds, starting with an 80 point ride on Air Mail (Pete Carr Pro Rodeo) for $1,329 in the first round, 87 points in the semi-finals round on Pink Smoke (Pete Carr Pro Rodeo) for $680, and first again in the shootout round with an 84 points on Scarlet Bell (Pickett Pro Rodeo Co) for an additional $2,500.

In the first round of the steer wrestling, Garrett Curry took first with a 4.2 second run for $1,329. Jacob Daniell took first in the semi-final round with his 4.2 second run for $583. And in the shootout round, Trace Harris took first with a 4.1 second run for $2,500.

The first round of the team roping was a bit rough for the rookies with only five qualifying run and two of the rookies running their horses into the arena fence while trying to rope their steers. Neither horse or cowboy was hurt, although it did send some dirt flying and a few photographers and unsuspecting fans scrambling that were near the fence line. Britton Grinstead & Scott Daily took first with their 9.2 second runs for $1,329 each. In the semi-final round, Klay Yaussi &Kash Yaussi took first with their 4.6 second run for $897 each. Gabe Williams & Faron Candelaria took first in the shootout round with a 4.4 second run for $2,500 each.

Ira Dickinson with an 82 point ride on Short Night (Pickett Pro Rodeo Co) in the first round

There was a three-way tie for first in the first round between Ira Dickinson, on Short Night (Pickett Pro Rodeo Co), Warwick Southern, on Allie Cat (Hampton Pro Rodeo), and Sam Weston, on Border Town (Pete Carr Pro Rodeo) with all riders scoring 82 points for $1,156 each. Rudy Troyer took first in the semi-final round with an 84.5 points on Chrome Buckle (Pete Carr Pro Rodeo) for $680. Ira Dickinson again took first in the shootout round with an 83 points on Exotic Dancer (Pete Carr Pro Rodeo) for $2,500.

The bulls were bucking the hardest all three rounds and qualified rides were few and far between. There were only two qualified rides in the first round, one in the semi-final, and none in the shootout round. Luke Mackey took first in the first round with his 83.5 points on Amigo (Pete Carr Pro Rodeo) for $2,976.
